The Obvious and Not-So-Obvious Value that Volunteers Bring to Events

Most volunteers aren't in it for the recognition; they just want to help. Volunteering can be a thankless role (which is exactly why you should make your volunteers feel appreciated). The tasks that volunteers commonly handle may seem minor, but the assistance of volunteers is vital to any event.

Monetary Value

Unpaid volunteers can make an event feasible by saving money in a variety of ways. For one, the labor they do would cost planners exorbitant amounts of money to hire, train, and pay employees. One staggering example is that of the 2016 Olympics. If the 70,000 volunteers had been paid minimum wage, it would have cost more than $100 million. That's quite a savings, and it doesn't even account for everything. Many volunteers fill skilled roles such as medical and first aid positions that conventionally pay much more than minimum wage. Even for events much, much smaller than the Olympics, the value that volunteers bring adds up quickly. A small budget would be stretched to the limit without volunteers.

Enthusiasm

Don't underestimate the value of a good group of enthusiastic volunteers. When people come together to support a cause, it can go a long way towards boosting an event's success. Hard work and spirit are infectious; just a few determined volunteers can spread their enthusiasm to everyone else. For both organizers and attendees, interacting with happy volunteers makes for an enjoyable event.

Publicity

Word-of-mouth is a powerful mechanism. Recurring events benefit greatly from loyal volunteers who had a good experience and came back to volunteer at subsequent events. Not only do you get passionate volunteers again and again, but you also get the benefit of your volunteers telling their family and friends about your event!
